Ah summer! The season where there’s no snow in sight, the sun is shining, nature is showing off its beauty and you get to spend time enjoying the outdoors.

While the summer season is probably your favourite season, your skin doesn’t necessarily feel the same way. The truth is that during the summer, our skin requires special attention due to the high heat, humidity and sun exposure. To help keep your skin glowing and healthy, we recommend following these 6 tips:

1. Make sunscreen a top priority

It’s easy to forget to wear sunscreen in the winter months (even though you should!) but in the summer, there’s no excuse. Not only will wearing sunscreen prevent sunburns which can be painful and even lead to more serious skincare issues in the future, but it can also slow down the ageing process. Who doesn’t want younger-looking skin, right? We recommend using a sunscreen with SPF 30-50.

2. Change your moisturizer and cleanser

Perhaps you were using products that promise extra moisture in the winter because of the dry weather conditions but in the summer, a more lightweight formula will likely be better suited for your skin’s needs.

3. Make antioxidants your best friend

Using antioxidants, especially in the summer months, is key to keep your skin protected from pollution and, if they contain sunscreen, from sun rays. Antioxidant serums contain lots of highly-concentrated good-for-you ingredients and should be applied in the morning, after you’ve cleansed your skin and before you apply moisturizer and sunscreen.

4. Wear less makeup

It should come as no surprise that in the summertime we tend to sweat more because of the high temperatures and possibly because of higher activity levels. Wearing heavy makeup in such conditions can cause clogged pores which may then result in breakouts. We recommend wearing a tinted moisturizer with SPF for some colour instead of heavy foundation. Not only will your skin be protected from the sun’s harmful rays, you’ll have glowing, sun-kissed skin, especially with products such as the Mineral Face Matte Tint Moisturizer SPF 30 from one of our favourite clean brands, COOLA.

5. Don’t forget the lips

People often take care of the skin on their face (and hopefully, neck!) but they seem to forget about their lips. Take the time to apply a moisturizing, SPF-based lip balm before lipstick application or even on its own for a more natural look.

6. Apply products as needed

Too often we hear people say they applied sunscreen in the morning and didn’t reapply later in the day. While sunscreen is essential in protecting the skin against UVA/UVB rays, it won’t do any good if it’s not applied as often as needed such as after an intense sweat session or a swim.
